Estelle Hubert, French voice over artist

From radio to my recording studio

I’m Estelle Hubert, a French voice over artist. Radio gave me a taste for the microphone. Ever since, I’ve kept exploring what a script can make us hear.

Every chapter has left something in my voice

The path has been anything but straight: doubts, new directions and, every time, the desire to keep going. To get acquainted, let’s rewind from today to my beginnings in radio.

  2. At the One Voice Awards in London, Blue Whale: Taste to Life, produced by BMV Communication, receives a nomination. I performed the brand film in French, then in English and Spanish with my French accent. In June, I welcome Pierre-Alain de Garrigues to the Apéro Voice.

  3. On 27 September 2025, VO Social comes to Paris for the first time, bringing nearly eighty voice professionals together at La Felicità. I write about the gathering in my article on VO Social Paris.

  4. Riviera des îles de Guadeloupe, produced by Vitamine C Production, is nominated at the One Voice Awards in London. A soft, almost whispered voice leaves the images room to speak. That year, the Apéro Voice, the online gathering I host, welcomes Hervé Lacroix in April and Sébastien Croteau in July, with more than sixty actors, sound engineers, directors and voice enthusiasts attending. On 25 January, in Manchester, I meet up with Katie Flamman at the first Great Big VO Social, organised by Helen and Rob Bee.

  5. My fourth win at the One Voice Awards in London, for a Hotels.com TV commercial recorded in a directed session between France and the United States. That year, the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences also nominates me for a Voice Arts Award, in a category recognising a body of international work.

  6. I join remote sessions with Wonderland Talents, working on both the craft and the business without leaving my booth.

  7. In May, I attend the One Voice Conference in London in person for the first time. I’ve returned every year since, meeting colleagues from around the world. At the One Voice Awards in London, Nocibé, Brand Equity, produced by Alexandre Pierre, brings me my third win.

  8. At the One Voice Awards, I win in London with MyStanley, produced by Chris Hopkins, and in Dallas in the United States with “Être soi-même”, produced by Vincent Bailleul. The “voice from a cupboard” of my early days is recognised by her peers in the Best International Voiceover Performance category. I also begin attending the One Voice Conference online that year. We build Studio Bis, my second recording studio: smaller, with the same exacting approach to sound, and equipped for remotely directed sessions. On 19 October 2021, I register my ESTELLE HUBERT® trademark with France’s INPI.

  9. My first One Voice Awards nomination in London, for an EVE Sleep commercial recorded in a directed session. A smooth, rounded voice with a slightly husky edge, and plenty of humour. That recognition gives me confidence in the range and quality of my work. In September, during the pandemic, the Apéro Voice is born: an online gathering where voice enthusiasts can meet and share.

  10. After two years of work, my main studio is ready. An entire room is dedicated to it: a control room and a booth built as a room within a room, with 60 cm walls, air gaps, cork, wood and cellulose insulation. It took months of research and expert advice. Stéphane brought my ideas to life with a craftsman’s precision. I fully embrace the pink glitter wall and Vicoustic panels, alongside a Neumann U87 microphone, a Manley VoxBox channel strip and Source-Connect so you can follow the session live.

  11. I record the audio guide for Beijing’s film museum, inaugurated during the Olympic Games. Thousands of words and nearly 250 Chinese directors’ and actors’ names to pronounce correctly. Apart from Jackie Chan, I don’t know any of them. The challenge is so intense that I cry more than once. With Stéphane’s help, I deliver a finished project. I remember it whenever a script contains difficult names.

  12. In August 2006, nearly eight months pregnant, I record the very first imaging package for Totem radio in a professional studio. I’m still the station’s voice today. A few days later, while playing a wicked witch for a Nigloland Halloween commercial recorded for Select Conseil, my son decides to make his entrance, five weeks early. I leave the moment in my outtakes before heading to the maternity ward.

  13. A pioneer of professional home recording in France since 2004

We invest over €10,000, and my husband Stéphane builds it with me, by hand: a Neumann microphone, a TL Audio Ivory 2 preamp and already a room-within-a-room booth designed for broadcast. Leading American voices are already working this way. In France, people ask: “What exactly are you? Did you train at Cours Florent? You have a proper studio?” They talk about “voices from cupboards”, and I start to doubt myself too. Impostor syndrome. I keep going, often working more than fifteen hours a day. It’s also where my most valuable training begins: directed sessions connected to my clients.

      My first home studio
    • The first home studio’s control room: two screens, mixing desk and window into the booth

  14. I’m making a live announcement in a Carrefour store when a synthetic voice cuts in. The new automated system takes over. My microphone goes silent, a computer speaks in my place, and part of my work disappears. That day, Stéphane and I decide to build a proper studio at home. I choose to defend the human voice by demanding more of my own.

  15. Since 1994, I’ve been recording in professional studios in Besançon, Lille and Paris, in Calais for Radio 6, and at Opalis FM, where Nikky Damien helps me make my first proper demos: documentary, corporate, commercial, a whole palette to explore. Commercials, liners and station imaging teach me what directors expect and the discipline of studio work. From 2000, I work in studios across northern France and expand my network. That’s where I meet Gilles Sénicourt, now Delta FM’s programme director. In 2002, I become the voice of Delta FM, a story that continues today.

  16. In April, I meet Stéphane Hubert. We fall for each other, beginning an extraordinary life together and a working partnership. On 1 October 1998, we create VOICES, our live events business. Microphone in hand, we host trade shows, fashion shows, store openings, shopping centres and stage events. Speaking to a passing audience and holding its attention in seconds is still what a commercial asks of me.

  17. I finish my studies with a business qualification and a degree in modern languages. I’m already dreaming of travelling with my voice: a suitcase, a microphone, an audio interface and one of the first PowerBooks, as heavy as a pack of bottled water, at a time when remote recording still seems a fantasy. Working in sales for an employers’ organisation brings me into contact with hundreds of businesses of every size: their constraints, their language and what they expect from a message. One conviction stays with me: selling is serving.

  18. To pay for my studies, I spend two years hosting “Sucrée Salée”, Radio 2000’s evening show from 8 pm to midnight: intimate, free-flowing conversation. Radio leaves me with a love of live performance and listening. A voice is always speaking to someone.

The Radio 2000 team, with Cyrille Alabouvette, now a voice actor
  19. Radio 2000 hires me to schedule and load commercials across its 13 frequencies. It’s demanding technical training. Fred Ferry, who heads the production studio, has me record my first commercials. The very first is a sung advertisement for a newspaper.

  20. It all begins in my village in the Doubs, answering the phones at Radio Charlie, a pirate station that became a free radio station in 1982. Christian at the mixing desk, me on the phone, surrounded by vinyl records and Revox tapes. Already, I feel I’m in the right place.

The tools have changed. My desire to perform, experiment and create is still here.

Learning keeps me moving

I keep working on my performance, with my coaches and through each recording session.

My most valuable training

Where I learn my craft

Since 2004

Directed sessions: not a week without one, a constant connection with my clients

Creative directors, producers, sound engineers and agencies from every country: with them, the learning continues. They take me into territory that can be tricky, surprising or deliciously entertaining. Sessions last anything from five minutes to three hours, and each helps me grow.

Voice coaching I’ve undertaken

  • Extreme voice · Vocal distortion · Monsters and creatures

    Sébastien Croteau: profile

Creating natural distortion without straining or damaging my vocal folds. It lets me play warriors, monsters and wild characters in animation and video games.

  • Voice placement · Breathing · Extreme voice

    Alexandre Damiani: website

    Founder of Lego Voce

Taking my voice to extremes while staying in control. His teaching on placement and breathing helps protect it when playing intense characters.

  • Reading aloud

    Françoise Cadol: profile

    Actor and performer

Mademoiselle Cadol is vocal grace personified. An extraordinary woman whom I admire without reservation. From her, I take the power of silence: a brief pause can carry a strong emotion.

  • Breathing

    Nathalie Caso

    Voice actor and coach

She comes from opera. Through her, I discovered the importance of breathing techniques, the foundation of everything I do at the microphone.

  • Voice in service of the images

    Pierre Maubouché

    Male voice actor

He taught me to let my voice recede so the pictures could speak.

For the craft and the business

  • Performance · Business development · International markets

    One Voice Conference: website

Online since 2021, in London every May since 2022

I develop my performance there, and learn about running my business: building an international profile, understanding markets and agencies, and what clients expect. It’s also the home of the One Voice Awards, where my work has received seven nominations.

  • Online sessions · Coaches and directors

    Wonderland Talents

    Since 2023

Remote sessions, without leaving my booth, to stay connected to what productions expect today.

I’ve had the chance to train there with coaches including Samantha Boffin and Brad Shaw.

Voice acting, a profession I love to share

Voice acting means performing. It also means running a studio, positioning your business, setting rates and finding clients. I share what more than twenty years behind the mic have taught me with actors who make this their profession.

What guides my performance

Before performing a script, I ask what it should make people feel or do.

When your direction is clear, I follow it. When you’re still finding the tone, I suggest approaches for you to hear.

What happens during a recording session?

The questions I ask you

Understand : What should the audience have understood by the final second?

Feel : What should your audience feel as they hear it?

Remember : Which word, name or promise should stay with them?

Behind every take, a partnership and a family

Stéphane, my husband: we fell for each other in April 1998. An extraordinary life together, and my working partner ever since. He built my studios by hand, layer by layer, with endless patience and an expert’s precision. He shares my joys, helps me through difficult moments and has always believed in my projects, even the wildest ones.

Our three children grew up in a house filled with voices. Each has taken a turn behind the microphone, in sessions full of laughter and connection. My family keeps me grounded, giving me the strength and creativity to move forward in this profession every day.

Alive, human

The more perfect synthetic voices become, the more I’ll show my imperfections: alive, human.

In 2026, I watched synthetic voices upend my profession in six months. Yet I’ve never felt so connected to my performance, so alive at the microphone. Perhaps that’s the wisdom of age.

Never Give Up

Back in 2003, a synthetic voice had already cut me off in a store. Today, artificial intelligence is entering every profession. I choose to find opportunities in it. My tone, my performance, my silences: everything a machine cannot capture remains my signature, in commercials, corporate films, e-learning, animation and even the wildest challenges.

I’ll keep training and stay curious. I haven’t had my last word. I have an appetite for life, for people, for challenges… and for words.

People and inspiration

Colleagues, encounters and voices that have become part of my journey.

François Lidove, French voice over artist: website

L’Apéro Voice

Through the Apéro Voice, I open a conversation with the people who make this profession what it is.
