The voice and the edit
Present, never intrusive
The film sets the pace. Before we switch on the mic, we look together at where the voice carries the story, where it makes space for someone’s testimony and where it falls silent.
For translated testimony, the voice over follows the original voice while leaving it audible, as in Almaz Mengesha or Diwali. When your project calls for it, I time the narration to your edit’s timecode.

I record following the direction we’ve agreed. You receive the takes for review and send me your feedback.

What is documentary voice over?
It’s recorded narration that accompanies a documentary or factual film, adding context, guiding the viewer and following the rhythm of the images without appearing on screen. For translated testimony, the voice over delivers the translation over the original voice, which remains audible.
How much does documentary narration cost?
The rate follows the film’s running time and use. Send me your script and your film’s running time, and I’ll reply personally with a clear quote.
Can you time the narration to my edit’s timecode?
Yes, when your project requires it. For a 52-minute television film, timing to timecode is included. For other running times, the quote specifies this work.
What types of documentary do you record?
Landscape and heritage films, science films, investigations, personal portraits and translated testimony, for television and online. You can hear examples in my demos.
What files will I receive?
Depending on your needs, you’ll receive raw takes for postproduction or cleaned, split and named files as specified in the quote. Files are supplied in WAV or AIFF, at the format and level agreed for your production. An MP3 version can also be provided.
What happens if the script changes after recording?
Performance retakes on the agreed script are included until your approval. Script changes after recording are quoted separately.
