In session

from different studios, we can find the same rhythm

In a directed session, you follow the recording live from your office or studio. You hear each take as I perform it, give me your direction, listen to my suggestions and refine the result with me. You can hear the recording take shape as we make it.

Send me your script and brief. We set out the work, usage rights and schedule in a quote. Once you’ve approved it, we arrange the recording.

We choose the tool that works with your setup and test the connection before the session.

Seeing each other helps us move quickly, build a connection and work together on the performance.

A word to emphasise, a rhythm to tighten, an intention to explore further: tell me, and I bring it into the next take.

I often offer two contrasting takes within the same intention, one more restrained and one more expressive, so you can compare them by listening.

A breath that is too pronounced or a smile that goes a little too far can change the meaning. You hear it immediately, and we adjust.

Your files: raw for your post-production or ready to use, split and named according to your naming convention.

your direction shapes my performance

I love these sessions. Being directed is one of the pleasures of acting: that exchange helps the right take emerge. It is a useful choice when the intention is subtle, several people need to decide, or the voice needs to fit the picture precisely.

  • Shape the intention as it happens

A voice over carries an intention that can depend on the smallest detail. In a session, you guide it as the performance takes shape.

  • Choose by listening

You choose the takes by listening. I mark them, and the edit starts with the versions you have selected.

  • Bring everyone into the decision

A television commercial, an international campaign, a film that represents a brand: your team hears the same take at the same time.

I explore the different shades of performance in my article on vocal intentions.

as though I were recording in your booth

I work with the remote connection that suits your setup. If you are in a studio, I connect to your control room so your engineer receives the take live. If you are at your desk, you listen on your computer through the same audio connections.

Source-Connect

My studio is Source-Connect Certified. You receive broadcast-quality sound, suitable for radio and television production.

SessionLink Pro

For work to picture, SessionLink Pro lets us use video together and place each word at the right moment.

Google Meet · Zoom · Teams

Video runs through your conferencing tool and sound through the audio connection. You can see the performance while receiving the take in broadcast quality.

Depending on your setup, we can also connect through Cleanfeed.

I also record locally in my studio throughout the session. If the connection drops, the take remains intact at full quality.

several pairs of ears, one take

A session brings several people together to listen. On larger projects, they may be joining from different countries and time zones.

  • The creative director

Keeps the performance aligned with the intention.

  • The sound engineer

    Looks after the recording.

  • The communications team

Keeps the brand's voice in focus.

  • The client

    Approves the result.

My role is to listen, adjust and suggest, so everyone can hear the version that works for them. Even with several opinions in the room, we keep the session moving.

join the session, or leave it with me

You choose your involvement in the recording. Depending on the project, you can leave it with me or direct it live. Before we record, we discuss the script, intention and practical requirements, and agree the schedule and files you need.

Your place in the session

Leave the recording to me

Send me the script and brief. I’ll record following the direction we’ve agreed. If you haven’t settled on a direction, I’ll draw on over 20 years of experience to suggest approaches. You then receive the takes for review.

Direct the session

Join the recording remotely. Together, we adjust the pace, nuances and performance, take by take.

For audio: Source-Connect, SessionLink Pro or Cleanfeed. For conversation: Google Meet, Zoom or Teams.

hear the craft behind the performance

A limited microphone or a poorly treated booth is something an engineer hears straight away.

I record in an isolated, soundproofed booth with Vicoustic treatment, using a Neumann U87 and a Manley VoxBox channel strip. The sound is clean and consistent, whether I record independently or in a directed session.

Agencies, studios and directors: before the session, let's discuss the intention, audience and practical requirements of your project.

  • Your vision, my interpretation

When your direction is clear, I follow it. When you’re still finding the tone, I’ll let you hear a few approaches: warmer, livelier or more measured. Together, we choose what serves your message.

  • Retakes until you’re completely happy

I refine the performance on the agreed script until it’s what you’re looking for.

  • Here before, during and after the session

A question about the script, feedback from your team or a detail to clarify after delivery: I’m here to keep your project moving.

Brands that trust my voice

Before your session

What is a directed voice over session?

A session where you guide the performance remotely while I record in my studio. We listen and choose the takes together.

Can I direct the session remotely, and what does it cost?

Yes, through Source-Connect, SessionLink Pro or Cleanfeed, from a broadcast studio. You listen and direct live, as you would in the booth. We arrange the session as part of your quote.

Can we see each other during the session?

Yes. We can use Google Meet, Zoom or Teams for video while the audio runs through Source-Connect, SessionLink Pro or Cleanfeed.

What should I prepare before the session?

The final script, pronunciation guidance, one or two audio references and the name of the person who will approve the performance.

Do we need a sound engineer during the session?

It is preferable. Your engineer can work from your control room, or my engineer can handle recording, markers and playback from my side.

Which files will I receive?

As standard, a clean, unclipped 48 kHz, 24-bit WAV, with an MP3 for review if needed. We agree the format in the quote.

Can I direct an e-learning recording live?

For e-learning, I record independently from your brief. Those scripts are often very long.
